Ticks and Kids' Summer Sports: A Parent's Prevention Guide
June 2026 · Roam
Soccer sidelines, baseball outfields, and cross-country trails all run through prime tick habitat. Kids won't think about it — so a little parent prep goes a long way.
Why fields are tick territory
Ticks wait in tall grass and the brushy edges of fields — exactly where balls roll, kids sit, and warm-ups happen. Long grass at the field's perimeter is riskier than a mowed center.
Kid-friendly protection
- Dress for it: when practical, socks pulled up and light-colored clothing so ticks are easy to spot.
- DEET-free repellent applied by a parent for sensitive skin — see our natural tick repellent for kids guide.
- A no-spray clip like Roam Repel on a bag or belt loop is an easy option for kids who hate being sprayed.
- Permethrin-treated practice clothes for regular players (treat the clothing, not the child).
The post-game check
Build a quick habit after outdoor practices and games:
- Bath or shower within a couple hours — it doubles as a check.
- Look at the warm, hidden spots: hairline, behind ears, neck, underarms, waistband, behind knees.
- Toss grass-stained kit in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to kill hitchhikers.
Keep it low-key
Frame it as a normal part of coming inside — "tick check!" — so it never feels scary. Consistency, not fear, is what keeps kids protected all season.
