Where Do Ticks Live? Common Hiding Spots and How to Avoid Them

Ticks don't jump or fly and they don't travel far — so knowing where they wait is half the battle. Here's where they live and how to avoid those spots.

Their favorite habitats

Ticks need humidity and cover. You'll find the highest numbers in:

• Tall grass and the brushy edges where lawns, trails, or fields meet woods.
• Leaf litter and shaded, moist ground under trees and shrubs.
• Wooded areas, especially with dense undergrowth.
• Overgrown yards and the border between manicured lawn and wild growth.

How they find you

Ticks climb to the tip of a grass blade or leaf and wait with their front legs outstretched — a behavior called questing. When you brush past, they grab on. That's why edges and narrow overgrown paths are the riskiest: you make contact with the vegetation they're perched on.

How to stay out of their reach

• Walk the center of trails, away from grassy edges.
• Avoid sitting directly on logs, stone walls, or leaf litter.
• In the yard, keep grass short and clear leaf litter and brush, especially near where people sit and play.
• Create a buffer of gravel or wood chips between lawn and woods.
